With all the streaming, direct-to-consumer wars that has been firing off, with Disney+ and HBO Max floating to the top of the flurry, Sony Pictures has been notably absent from the bout. Until now.
Sony has come forward and mad a deal with the household name in film streaming – Netflix. And in this deal they have brokered an agreement to allow multi-year, exclusive first-pay-window licensing deal in the U.S. that will allow Netflix first-pay-window rights to Sony Pictures titles following their theatrical and home entertainment windows.
The exclusive first-pay-window licensing deal in the U.S. will begin with the studio’s film slate next year in 2022, which includes anticipated titles like Morbiusand Uncharted.
And speaking about Uncharted and Tom Holland and Sony… what a great segue. The Netflix and Sony deal will be valid for the span of 5 years, which means many of Sony’s coming Marvel ventures, namely Spider-Man: No Way Home, will be making their way to Netflix.
All now left to wonder is what conversations are happening around the Marvel/Disney tables and whether Sony discussed their plans prior to creating that Netflix deal.
More as things develop.
