This move is a suprise as Nintendo has been quite the stubborn goose when it came to making the move into mobile gaming but we guess the allure finally won them over. It was a long run, but felt this was the next logical step seing how long it took them to bring Duck Hunt to the WiiU.

Don’t expect the classics making their way to mobile though, as mentioned in a DeNA statement:

To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system

Baby steps, Nintendo. Baby steps. All part of our complex love relationship with Nintendo.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, this console will be a “brand new concept”. Not much details beyond that, but Iwata hopes to give more on the project come next year. But the mention of it this early is a show of strength and a show for fans that a move in mobile gaming won’t redivert Nintendo’s efforts in the gaming console arena.

Cross platform compatability is a very strong feature being introduced as well, with Nintendo and DeNA providing a connecting service that runs across smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Nintendo’s own devices.

For one we are happy that Nintendo has begin flirting with mobile games, as the style of games are so suited for that arena and could be their golden goose egg. Imagine. A SMASH Bros MOBA?!! Take money! Gimme gimme!
