Moon Knight’s appeal to actor Oscar Isaac? MCU disconnection.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has entered a soft degenerative era. And it’s got a DC movie problem.

Marvel’s impending implosion (both on and off screen) may have been hypothesised by myself for sometime now, but it seems people are catching and are giving Marvel projects the DC scrutinising eye before attaching themselves to a franchise. Oscar Isaac is one such actor who went on record to say the appeal of taking on the role of Marc Spector – the titular character in the upcoming Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus-destined TV Series Moon Knight – was that the story was far-removed enough from the MCU.

We knew this was the case for Ethan Hawke, which was the selling point Isaac lured him in with. But we never suspected that was the case for actor Oscar Isaac as well. Which now makes sense when you consider the latest rocky franchise he went in on – Star Wars – where there was little room to transcend (being modelled as Han Solo 2.0 can have that effect on you).

Speaking to IGN, Isaac had this to say about his upcoming role and its apparent disconnection from the MCU quilt to building a narrative more organically ‘from the ground up’ as opposed to hooking on to establish motifs and moments:

For me, my favorite Marvel film is still the first Iron Man. You know, it’s the one that feels like it’s breaking through in some way, and it has such an indelible performance, [where] Downey comes in and just owns every minute that he’s on screen. It also feels quite adult, and it’s messy, ‘cause it’s the first one, you know? So I like that a lot.

[Moon Knight] was a similar approach, where we’re building this thing from the ground up. It’s still in the universe, but that’s not part of the plot, that’s not part of the story – it rests on its own terms, and it’s really an internal exploration of this person. So this person is not connected to any of his reality that is happening – that’s part of his problem, whether it’s Marvel or not. So it really just tries to get into the skin of this guy.

Now this has yet to be seen come the day of judgement, but we suspect as a Marvel Knight, the characters story could benefit like Daredevil did from building its own lore than using the wider MCU as a crutch for ill-shaped narrative. Something Marvel has been guilty of of late. But what do you think? How ‘disconnected’, if at all, do you think Moon Knight is from the rest of the MCU?
