The current Hollywood trend of rebooting and remaking past franchises is showing no signs of stopping. The next product to get the reboot treatment from Universal is Van Helsing. Script writer Eric Heisserer spoke with HitFix recently about the planned Van Helsing reboot.
Interestingly, he mentioned the recent incarnation of Mad Max as the inspiration for this new version of Van Helsing. Heisserrer had this to say in regards to this influence: “I can only say that early on, our inspiration for his behaviour and his mannerisms was all in Mad Max.”
This makes a lot of sense as Van Helsing is also a character that has witnessed many horrors. He has seen violence and he has lost a lot. That weariness, and cold detachment from being submerged in a grim world is something that is present in both characters.
Universal are also creating movies for iconic monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein that will tie-in to a larger cinematic universe. Could the new Van Helsing play a part in the Universal Monsters franchise?
