In spite of the dubious history live-action video game movies have had since their conception, Warner Bros. is banking hard on making Mortal Kombat coming reboot an embryonic launching pad for the future. Provided everything goes to plan, of course.
It has been revealed that if the Mortal Kombat movie goes well with critics and audiences, we could see the coming of a new multi-film franchise. At the moment, there are a total of four more Mortal Kombat movies that are mapped out.
Of course, success translates to money over cult value, which could be here or there for the forthcoming reboot if it falls more on the slight right or left of mediocre. In any case, provided fans really flock to it, we could be seeing a true multiverse.
I also think it would be interesting and smarter to create a character-focused narrative that focused on a particular part of the Mortal Kombat franchise – say Scorpion’s revenge for example – as the driving force. When films have too many players and focal points, the risk of sporadicalness increases twofold.
Here’s to the MK success, nevertheless.
