It is not an uncommon occurrence for Man of Steel sequel rumours to pop up every now and again, however, the latest report has definitive people attached to a Superman project in development.

A Superman movie reboot in the works over at the WB Pictures camp. To produce is J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates is up to write the screenplay.

Now, given it is in the early stages, the actor set to play Superman is anyone’s guess. Whether this film will be a soft/hard reboot like The Suicide Squad featuring the current actor – Henry Cavill – playing the role or going with a whole new actor is anyone’s guess.

Now, opinion time. Henry Cavill, in spite of the DCEU failings which amount to many, is an awesome Superman. Particularly from the aesthetic standpoint. And as such I believe he should return and play the character with the right story.

His character would have to diverge enough for audiences to disassociate the rebooted Superman from the current DCEU, which will put Cavill’s acting scope under strain and test. Alas, the results, with the right story and angle, could spell a win for DC. Just like Joker did.

The main problem I see is the same problem that has plagued Superman script and comic writers since the characters creation is how can you create vulnerability in a character that is near invulnerable. What is the fear of death to someone seemingly impervious to dying. Using loved ones and his moral compass as collateral has somewhat gotten old really quickly. At least how it has been done before.

All that to say this: sir Coates, this rests on your shoulders. No pressure. After all, he was responsible for this Black Panther series’ great run.

And please, no more having Superman’s lowest moments being followed by a power yellow sun tan. And go easy on the lens flares.
