Rumours turned out to be true. Microsoft, the epitome of archaic technology has put up a hefty price tag to acquire Mojang, the creator of the popular Minecraft game, for 2.5 billion USD. The deal is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2014. Me thinks X-box has a new virtual world game in the works to take on Nintendo.
Luckily for us, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson won’t be joining the Mircosoft team but will be focussing on that next ‘small web experiment’.
Our hopes is the ‘free’ element that has arguably made Minecraft the most transcendent and truly interactive game doesn’t become something closed off and restricted by an large corporate tinkering. As long as Microsoft respects the integrity of the brand, things should be okay for fans worldwide, and the franchise will continue to grow exponentially. But with Microsoft’s dubious history of market monopolies and multiple product purchases for basic functionality, we hope this latest absorption isn’t a gambit in some vying for control in the gamersphere.
