With another big play by Microsoft that is bound to reshape the ecosystem, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard has not gone unnoticed, particularly by Sony’s Playstation. And seemingly Sony’s response has been limited to assuring that already planned Playstation-bound Activision games will go ahead. Until news of Sony’s latest purchase seemed retaliatory in nature, if only on the symbolic level.

Sony has purchased and acquired Bungie. Yes that Bungie. The guys behind the Xbox juggernaut FPS franchise Halo. And at the hefty pricetag of 3.6 billion dollars, with 1.2 billion to retain key Bungie talent. Sony’s play, in light of Sony’s recent acquisition, understandably looks more retaliatory than strategic.

Though this may seem all tit-for-tat at this point, Playstation CEO Jim Ryan assures us that acquiring Bungie was a transaction that was in development in the last 5-6 months, and not desperate response to Microsoft recent acquisition. Like Playstation did not hear about Xbox moves in the embryonic stage through the grapevine whilst it was happening? Shrugs.

Nevertheless, a colossal shift in the gamersphere is bound change the game of entertainment for the all time. And if we are just going purely off of logic and impact, Microsoft’s Disney Plus strategy is bound to be a win for them especially in the long run.
