Netflix has announced that they are expanding their anime titles on the platform. Among the planned anime titles, the network plans on creating series based on the Pacific Rim franchise and their recent Altered Carbon title.
The Pacific Rim anime series is set to build on the premises of Pacific Rim and sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising. The narrative will focus on two siblings who get their hands on an abandoned Jaeger all in an attempt to find their missing parents in hostile territory infested with Kaiju. Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution) will act as co-showrunners.
Altered Carbon is set in the same universe as Netflix’s live-action series, which is receiving a second season. It will “explore new elements of the story mythology,” is all Netflix has said about the anime series so far. It will be written by Dai Sato (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) and Tsukasa Kondo. So ultimately, it may outdo the actual live-action series.
Other noteworthy titles being spearheaded by Netflix is Cagaster of an Insect Cage. Based on a manga set in a post-apocalyptic world where the disease “Cagaster” turns people into giant murderous insects. The series is set to be directed by Full Metal Panic’s Koichi Chigira.
Yasuke is set in a war-torn feudal Japan. The narrative focuses on a retired Ronin must protect a mysterious child against dark forces. Yasuke was created by The Boondocks’ LeSean Thomas. And judging from the name may lend itself to the legend of the first black samurai of Japan.
Trese, based on the graphic novel of the same name and focused on a woman who goes head to head with a criminal supernatural underworld, set in an alternate Manila. Trese will be executive produced by The Legend of Korra’s Jay Oliva.
