Matthew Vaughn has unveiled some rather disappointing news. Remember that Flash Gordon film reboot announced a while back. Well, Vaughn was attached to the project and has unveiled that it is no longer happening.
Vaughn went into some detail as to why it isn’t during his press run of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. For the most part, it’s Mickey Mouse’s fault. Particularly, he felt his space opera couldn’t stand apart from the Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises:
Yeah, we’ve been working on it. For me, the only problem with Flash Gordon is Guardians [of the Galaxy] kind of stole what I would have liked to have done with it. You’ve got Star Wars, you’ve got Guardians, so you’ve got to have your own space opera, but you have to find something that can survive among these two very, very great franchise
Well, sounds like the imagination well’s a bit dry. But if Flash is no longer a factor, what about Mandrake The Magician? Who knows. And beside, Flash Gordon is more hard-core sci-fi, not so much fantasy like Star Wars or spoofy like GoTG. So surely you can do better than a bastard son of a serial god-planet impregnator storyline.
And no doubt Ming The Merciless would need some reworking to get rid of the taint of ol’ school ‘representation’.
