Marvel Studios is set to add-on to their firsts in the coming phases of the MCU. This time, the company boast the first Asian superhero slated to star in his own film. The character is Shang-Chi, and though not greatly known to many, he is referred to as the “Master of Kung Fu” in the Marvel universe.

The character first appeared in 1973’s Special Marvel Edition No. 15.

Chinese-American writer, Dave Callaham, will be writing the screenplay. Callaham most recently co-wrote the sequel for Wonder Woman 1984, and is writing the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.

We suspect that the best approach for Marvel will to go the Black Panther route, adding the level of authenticity that a near all-asian cast and crew can deliver. Or there is always Iron Fist. And knowing the success of the Crazy Rich Asians film, Hollywood and the West may be more primed for a new type of hero to be seen on film.

More as things develop.
