below. Capy games. The Action Pixel. @theactionpixelWe’re a sucker for old school games revamped with sleek graphics whilst keeping true to the arcade nuances. No Man’s Sky and Switch Galaxy Ultra are great examples, yes, but what about you fans of Legend Of Zelda NES games, the bird’s eye view of sprawling landscapes entrenched in beauty and mysticism.

Well, Below is a title that should both entice your need to marry classic with ‘modern’. Capy Games, the developer behind titles like their titular Super Time Force, including co-developing of iOS game Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, is the studio behind Below.

below. Capy games. The Action Pixel. @theactionpixelbelow. Capy games. The Action Pixel. @theactionpixelThe landscapes are vast and dark, the aerial view is reminiscent of the NES gameplay of NES classics like Legend Of Zelda and Pokémon, but themes that totter on the stuff of dark dreams. The wide angle aerial views work even greater when seeking to contain the presence and very breadth of a dark growing nemesis. Attention to detail, including textures, focus and reflections add to the overall modern-rendered aesthetic; Capy’s Below will surely see avid gamers of classic arcade and modern high-end graphics titles meeting on sacred, mutual ground.

The use of space and lighting, not to mention being backed by thoughtful sound design, the atmosphere is certainly brooding to say the least. One would also expect the wide shot to take away from the angst and atmosphere, but what the Devs have done to combat that is to use lighting and shadow to continual engulf players and keep a sense of danger as players traverse though unknown territories rife with danger. Kinda like Dark Souls II.
