New “The Mummy” movie gets announced with the return of Brendan Fraser in titular role

The resurgence of Brendan Fraser to Keanu-Reeves-cult-status has been a slow burner for sometime, however we knew this day, in some form or another, was coming.

The actor is set to reprise his role in a newly announced Mummy movie. The Mummy franchise was what propelled the actor into stardom, alongside actor Rachel Weisz, who is also set to return alongside Brendan Fraser.

And with the last instance of The Mummy franchise having taken place under the weird Dark Universe run that died before it even started, Hollywood seems to be returning to the tried and true formula. Hey, some things even Tom Cruise can’t outrun.

Radio Silence, the directing team known for the recent Scream franchise movies, will direct the feature for Universal with David Coggeshall writing the screenplay.

And while further news on the film is still under wraps (see what I did there), sources close to the project are saying the coming The Mummy movie is not a reboot, but rather a sequel that would disregard the events of the third movie.
