The details of the latest cancelled “Assassin’s Creed” game would have made you an enemy of the KKK.

Can’t have that, apparently.

Ubisoft has no problem dipping into different exotic themes, peoples, religions and moments in history. However when it hits to close to home, it seems their decisions are not fuelled solely by microtransaction, but fear of… well, upsetting the far-right.

According to Game File‘s Stephen Totilo, a new Assassin’s Creed game was set to go into production last year around summer. The concept of the game? Set partially during but mostly after the Civil War, specifically the Reconstruction era in the late 1800s. Gamers would play a black protagonist (yeah, a selection of readers probably lost their mind hearing just that) who had been enslaved in the South (slightly got them back), but decided to move West to start a new life. However, the Assassins would eventually recruit him and ask him to return home to fight various forces, including the Ku Klux Klan.

I personally would have loved to hang out some white sheets to dry, however, this seemed too brazen a direction for Ubisoft. And why was it abandoned, even being in production which would have taken years to complete. Guess. The abrupt cancellation came after the backlash to Yasuke being revealed for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Because who wants to upset *those* players or push *those* fans away from the series.

In the end, the untitled AC game is but another notch in the number of games that have been placed on the chopping block for the wrong reasons.

What lies for the future of the franchise that has made its mark crafting stories imbued in the rich histories and cultures of the world? Well, if their decisions are dictated by fear, especially on addressing issues of history and culture, then it will be equivalent to using the Animus and being satisfied with an incomplete flickering mess of a timeline.
