After the departure of Ruby Rose from the role of Batwoman in the titular DC Comics and CW Network television show after Season 1 came with speculation of the show set to be cancelled. But Season 2 was still on the cards, and the showrunners have settled on their the new actor set to take on the role of the Batwoman.
The CW casts Javicia Leslie as the series lead.
Leslie spoke on the recent news:
I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,
Hey, they recast the mom on Fresh Prince. Though I myself never got over that. However Leslie’s character is in fact a new character on the show set to take up the mantle of the Bat. The character is so-named Ryan Wilder and is described as likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.
Ryan origins is not all squeaky clean either, as much of her earlier years were spent rubbing shoulders with Gotham’s criminal element. Drug-running, being most wanted by the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.
The show is scheduled to return in January on Sunday nights on The CW.
