“The New Mutants” horror comic film will not be rated-R, but PG-13. The ‘hardest’ ever says director Josh Boone
Deadpool and Logan may have enjoyed success in the R-rated zone, but it looks like The New Mutants won’t be following suit. According to the director Josh Boone,via the Empire magazine, The New Mutants film will rated PG-13.
Here’s what Boone had to say about the news:
This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.
It’s a little strange that this is the case however seeing the film was prsented to us as a horror film in league with The Shine, which is about as hardcore as you could get back in the day.
But this shouldn’t be considered a total loss as yet, as Boone spoke on the horror aspect and expanded his thoughts on the projects direction:
We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by [Marvel Comics writer Bill Sienkiewicz], and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ’80s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.
Will they get the trilogy off before Disney/Fox consumption happens? And, according to Boone, The New Mutant team will feature no members in costume:
There are no costumes. That alone makes it different. They can’t be with the other kids at the X-Mansion. They’re too ucked up. They’ve all killed people, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Part of us thinks Disney’s push back on the release date by a whole year was possibly to encompass the time needed for further re-edits and possible reshoots to make the film digestible for a younger demographic. In that case, we can only wait and see if the horror comes across well given the rating restriction.
The New Mutants is slated for release in cinemas come February 22nd 2019
