Given the casting call, we speculated the animated feature of Marvel’s friendly neighbourhood Spider would put Miles Morales in the black and red costume. Now confirmed, Sony’s yet untitled Spider-Man animation will star the African American /Puerto Rican Brooklyn native.

The untitled movie is being written by Phil Lord and produced by Chris Miller. They directed The Lego Movie and are also directing 2018’s untitled Han Solo film. The new Spider-Man movie is being directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince, Puss in Boots) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of Guardians) and is slated to open on December 21, 2018. Avi Arad (Iron Man, Spider-Man) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) are also producing the new Spider-Man animated film.

The words of Lord and Miller at the Sony Pictures Animation event today inspired some confidence in the direction of the project:

What inspired us the most is that anyone can where the mask. You can be any race, creed, or color.

This is not the first time we are going to see Morales animated on screen. As you know Miles Morales appears in the Disney XD show Ultimate Spider-Man, voiced by Donald Glover, who is also starring in Marvel’s Spider-Man Homecoming movie
