With all the hype generated by Star Wars’ Rogue One, J.J. Abrams recent addressing on character Rey’s parents will be pretty much a mystery still come Episode VIII.
Speaking with Chris Rock at the Tribecq Film Festival, he told the audience:
Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII. So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”
He later added further comment to his statement via Entertainment Weekly, that he was merely trying to convey The Force Awakens builds up the mystery of Rey’s parents without resolving it:
What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world
So by that statement, we possibly already have seen or hear the name or know of her parents. But undoubtedly she has to be a Skywalker, right? Maybe Obi-Wan’s love-child?
Rey’s story picks up again in Rian Johnson’s still-untitled Episode VIII later in 2017.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is slated to hit cinemas December 15th 2017
