It was hella awesome news seeing Spider-Man making his way back home to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. But as things are surely buzzing over at the Marvel camp, it seems there is a huge chance Spider-Man will not be Peter Parker, or white for that matter.
The Wrap’s reporter Jeff Sneider recently talked on the podcast about the possibility of who Spider-Man would be in the coming Marvel film:
This is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now: Spider-Man is not going to be white… Spider-Man is not going to be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man is going to be most likely black. But there is a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure not white. I don’t think it’s going to be Peter Parker. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character. Like I said last week, the e-mails that leaked were perceived to be racist in some quarters. I really think that is going to play into things.
In the comic, Mile Morales is Spiderman in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, and his ethnicity is of black/ African American and Latino / Puerto Rican descent. And seeing the long roster of recent Marvel films take most of their film cues from the Ultimate Universe, it would only make sense that Marvel’s Spider-Man would be Morales. How certain “fanboys” will take it, considering how warmly Johnny Storm was welcomed is yet to be seen.
It’s rumoured Spider-Man will make his Marvel Cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War, which is out May 2016, and a standalone Spider-Man film is scheduled for July 28th 2017.
All we ask is don’t use Jaden Smith. Nothing personal against the kid, just saw a ‘rap’ music vid he did and it just rubbed me the wrong way.
