Quentin Tarantino is on the verge of going where no man has gone before. Well, you’ll get the idea. News has surfaced that the famed director of cult classic Pulp Fiction is slated to helm an R-rated Star Trek feature film.

Earlier in the week it was learned that Quentin Tarantino pitched the idea of a Star Trek movie to JJ Abrams. It apparently was good enough to get the greenlight and the team is now in the hunt for a scriptwriter.

The R-rating shouldn’t come as a surprise (it’s Tarantino, people) but the mature rating will be a first for the Star Trek franchise. But it looks like Abrams and Paramount signed off on it being so.

It’s reported that Tarantino met in a writers room with Mark L. Smith, Lindsey Beer, and Drew Pearce, that they came up with ideas for the film, with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) looking like the frontrunner to write the flick.

Now, will the R-rating be indicative of just some added colourful language, gore and blood, or some adult sex scenes. All of the above? With some genre-bending jumping from sci-fi to a western to the film noir to classic space adventure films of the 50’s back to modern sci-fi. Probably. But it will be interesting to see whether Tarantino goes full throttle or tones down his more eccentric, independent film sensibilities when dealing with Paramount execs.
