Marvel has released an in-depth interview it held with Jon Bernthal, who is set to play Frank Castle / The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2 on Netflix. And as it turns out, Bernthal gives insight into the nature of Frank Castle and the ‘dark headspace’ that he had to master in order to bring life to vigilante juggernaut that is The Punisher:

Well, I think that, fortunately and unfortunately, a dark headspace is nothing new to me. I have some experience with it in the characters that I’ve gotten to play and each one is so different and each one, I think, sort of requires its own process and its own method to get involved [in]. I will say that being a father and being a father of young kids, it’s a real game-changer for me. With a character like this, the trauma that he’s suffering from and what this man has gone through, I’m extremely grateful that this opportunity came to me after I was a father. I think it’s essential in playing the part and understanding what it would mean to fail your family in that way and to lose your family on your watch and how serious that is.

And that pretty much is why he is such a dangerous variable in Daredevil 2.

Synopsis reads:

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.

“Because I think you are a half measure. I think you are a man that can’t finish the job. I think that you are a coward”… bejesus!
And then in the end, we are politely reminded… hey, there is more than the Punisher Matt has to deal with. Elektra!
