The Joker is one of the greatest, prolific villains in DC – no – comic history ever. The villain often led to existential musings the blurred the line between insanity and being hella woke.

Now fans can look to an origin story of the Clown Prince of Crime.

A Joker origin movie is reportedly in development, and it has some decent names attached. Set to produce the film is the iconic Martin Scorsese. The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, alongside directing the Joker film, will also co-write the screenplay with 8 Mile writer Scott Silver.

Deadline reports the Joker movie will be a Batman Universe spinoff flick set in the 1980s. The role of a younger Joker and, as such will not star Jared Leto.

From what it sounds like this films are being treated as standalone films, and DC is planning on doing more films like this on different characters. Surely jumping on the Disney “A Star Wars story” bandwagon.

Part of Joker’s appeal is his past is enshrouded in mystery. From “do you know how I got these scars” constant retelling and revising of his own history to the “one bad day away” take on the Joker in The Killing Joke played on the idea of a character’s mind so warped by insanity that he himself knows little about his past-self. Setting up a solid origin story, if not played right, could ruin the mystique and the character’s mythos. And let’s just say our faith in WB has been hit and miss with DC characters of late.

More news as things develop.
