As scatterbrain as DC Comics’ strategy on syncing their teeth into film projects it had little faith in the first place like Joker, it looks like they are heavily banking on the megastardom of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and the Black Adam movie to be a gateway drug to other DC franchise films.
So even though we get a hint of Black Adam being mentioned in passing in the Shazam! movie, we should not expect to see Black Adam to make his official debut in a Shazam! film or for him to have any initial meeting with the Big Cheese any time soon.
Dwayne Johnson spoke on this with Screen Rant in an interview:
Without giving too much away, it’s not in the plans right now. I think the approach that we’re talking I feel really good about, and all of the filmmakers do too as well. It’s an origin story and that’s where we start it and we root it, and then we build out from there. Now, not to say Shazam isn’t on my radar. Of course, Shazam is, but so is all of DC.
Cute way of trying to creating a tourniquet for the rest of a Snyder-led DC Universe until things get sorted. But an introduction of the Justice Society of America would open up the DCEU for a second chance at a huge Avenger-like movie done right. With added nostalgia would be an interesting skew.
The Justice Society of America initially was comprised of Doctor Fate, Hour-Man, the Spectre, the Sandman, the Atom, the Flash, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), and Hawkman, who led the team for the most part.
Black Adam played a key role in Geoff Johns and David Goyer’s JSA series, which helped transform the character from an outright villain to a more conflicted figure intent on saving his ancestral kingdom of Kahndaq. An iteration of the character that seems to be more in line with the Rock’s coming portrayal.
DC’s Black Adam is slated for cinematic release come December 22, 2021
