Remember that rather obscure Sherlock Holmes/Pokémon title that was adorable beyond words? Well there is a film based on it coming out. And it stars Ryan Reynolds.

Yeah, Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds is set to play the lead in the live-action Pokémon movie, which Universal Studios has also pegged a release date – May 10, 2019. And Reynold’s playing Pikachu, sadly, will be achieved via motion capture, not slapping yellow paint all over his ass.

Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Little Big Lies) also star in the movie, with the film following Smith’s character’s father who has been kidnapped, which forces the teen to team up with Detective Pikachu in order to find him. Newton’s character is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls, upcoming animated Spider-Man movie) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel) wrote the latest draft of the Detective Pikachu script.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing Detective Pikachu, which is due to start filming mid-January in London.

More as things develop.
