Han Solo, the upcoming Star Wars spin-off that we may or may not need, has a new pilot on this here Millenium Falcon that is the film. Ron Howard has taken up the responsibility as director after directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were let go over – you guessed it – creative differences on the film’s direction in terms of tonality and style.
He’s got a few films under the belt, including A Beautiful Mind and Rush.
But we honestly just remembered that episode of Arrested Development.
Here’s what President of Lucasfilm – Kathleen Kennedy – had to say about the transition of delegated Empiric power:
At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.
This would all be ‘meh’ news, except the Lord / Miller team were damn near pass two-thirds of the film’s principle photography. So to pull the proverbial plug on their directorial input is sort of a bit late in the game. Which leads us to believe their transgression was more… or less (in the petty sense) than “creative differences”.
The untitled Han Solo / Han Solo: A Star Wars Story film is slated for a May 25th 2018, release
