News of Kevin Smith directing an episode of The Flash this year has got the odd comic fan smiling. But more potential villain appearances have sent expectations shooting upwards and outwards forming a forcefield membrane of hope, like that over a certain ‘Planet Of The Apes’-type city. Can fans expect Flash to be running around like a madman in Gorilla City?

In ‘Gorilla Warfare’ episode, Flash and the team just about manage to send Grodd to a location on Earth-2 where he’s surrounded by other hyper-intelligent gorillas, the foundation of what is Gorilla City in the comics.

And though we won’t be seeing any more of the Gorilla or Grodd in Season 2, as its focus is mainly on villain Zoom. But Flash’s Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg compared the slow build-up to a Gorilla City-focused storyline to that of Ra’s al Ghul arrival on sister DC Comics’ Arrow series:

I would liken the Gorilla City thing to Ra’s al Ghul. You know, you hear about “the man from Nanda Parbat” in [Arrow] Season 1, and “the man who showed Malcolm the way,” and then you met Nyssa, then in Season 3 you met Ra’s. So, it’s a long-term thing.

In any case, we know the likes of Grodd and Killer Shark is all down to budget, so we can only imagine what a city of hyper-intelligent gorillas looks like. Hopefully we can get more than a few seconds worth.

The Flash returns on Tuesday January 19th 2016 on the CW
