With Microsoft boasting Xbox One backwards compatability that enables you to play a slew of Xbox 360 titles, seems Sony has chimed in to one up that.

Sony is set to create PS4 that will be able to play Playstation 2 games. You heard right, PS2.And we could see this as soon as 2016 rolls around.

This is possible through Sony installing a PS2 emulation software in PS4 that allows gamers to play PS2 titles.

What’s also interesting is the emulator (which already exists and has been tested successfully) upscaled the titles from their original resolutions /aspect ratios (512 x 448 and 640 x 448) to a new native resolution on the PS4 at a decent 1292 x 896.

Sony released this statement re the move:

We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

So, we know the PS4 has the ability to play PS2 games. We don’t know how long it’s had the capability or how many titles Sony will release, but it exists. We’ll continue to investigate.

“Great news huh?! Who’s ready to delve back into the pixel nostalgia that is PS2 titles? Let us know what you think in the comment section below”
