Cyclops in the X-Men is often portrayed as the tactician and resourceful commander and team leader. A bit of a tool, but certainly feels every loss where it occurs and makes those hard decisions where needs be.
In X-Men: Apocalypse, however we get a slightly different Scott Summers aka Cyclops. Tye Sheridan, who plays the mutant who can shoot beams from his eyes, gave us a bit of insight to his character in a recent interview:
My character is angry and a bit lost, which I feel like is where I’ve met a lot of my characters — in these sort of young life transitions where they’re struggling to figure things out about themselves. He’s now learning about being a mutant and trying to handle his superhero powers. The arc for the character is really cool for me — it’s not like I’m just stepping into it and I’m a superhero and it’s cool and all that with the suit. You kind of see the progression of this character — where he comes from, what he has to overcome and where he goes at the end of the film. It’s a great arc.
But to be fair Tye, scrape the surface of an even more mature Cyclops and you’ll still get an ‘angry’ Cyclops. Particularly if ‘scratching the surface’ involves any form of retractable adamantium claws.
Okay, let’s hope him and the young X-Men team get it together before a X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover.
20th Century Fox’s X-Men Apocalypse is directed by Bryan Singer and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Ian McKellen, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Oscar Isaac.
