Bitch Planet. Bitch Planet panel art. THE ACTION PIXEL @theactionpixelWith possibly the most bitching title in comic book history, Bitch Planet has recently landed like a violent neon fuschia-pink comet of rage, brutal dominance and exploitation-pulp right between the eyes before donkey punching you in the back of the head. Celestial body space sex metaphors aside, Bitch Planet has started off in spectacular fashion. The comics’ creators Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro go full throttle on their first issue, not caring much for PC road signs or anything minor like that.

Bitch Planet premise is simple. It’s a planet for bad women. A prison planet to be precise. In a dystopian future, women pretty much get sent to prison for everything, from murder to the go-to-charge of ‘non-compliance’. The comic pulls on different strands of narrative, each perspective of different women giving a brutal, uncompromising look at how cruel the Planet of Bitches is. Not to mention this Doomsday-inspired evil witch:

It’s a grimier 1950’s sci-fi fantasy type concept: women in cages, mixed with that exploitation brand of entertainment, Bitch Planet is a pulp comic and narrative that doesn’t pretend to be something else. The artwork is good; one would expect renders like that sci-fantasy art of hand-painted renders with a little edge, but with a title like Bitch Planet, who needs to be picky?

It’s Orange Is the New Black (only grittier, hard as nails and more worthy… in fact totally forget that comparison, I feel stupid for mentioning it now, I think I was on Netflix all day today…. I digress…) meets Lock Down (only with more bitches) meets the essence of every film, comic and literature in the exploitation genre ever. Definitely worth a read, even if it is just to ask for the title aloud in the comic book retailer. Another super ‘hurray’ from Image Comics. Now go get me some whiskey…
