The DC Universe will never reboot again

With all the revamping and restructuring the major comic publishers have been going through, like Marvel’s Secret Wars and DC Comics’ Convergence, there seems to be not much of terra firma when it comes to narratives.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio however has made quite the bold statement by saying DC has done their last ‘relaunch’, and as such fans won’t have to see their franchises rebooted again and again:

Our goal is never to be in a position where we are restarting, relaunching a line, ever again. Quite the opposite. What we really want to do is build on what we created from the launch of New 52, take what existed beforehand, integrate that in, to give us the best interpretations of the characters that organically move forward, and are all part of one big continuity that is DC Comics.

Instead of reboots, DiDio approach to the new DCYou is to focus on getting the best artists and writers on the respective titles:

You can see 400 titles on a monthly basis. We want to make sure we have the best talent pushing forward – we’re looking at the entire talent pool now, and saying, ‘Who’s best to execute our books? The best interpretation, the best voice, the ones that are able to push this character moving forward?

In all honesty, it sounds like a politician’s promise. Not like many of us will live to see 75 years into the future, when they need a fresh lick of idea paint. But our mortality aside, isn’t ‘revamping’ the stuff of what comics do? Course, the fewer revamps the better, but to promise no more reboots? It would take a lot of forward, directional thinking in terms of narrative arcs. So even though Convergence may have brought DC franchises from every spectrum, past and present, under one umbrella, now they’re gonna have to do some narrative sorting and stacking, which is a task in itself.
