According to Deadline, Ben Affleck’s role behind the scenes on Justice League has just increased. If Affleck’s influence in the DC cinematic universe was not strong enough as the new face of The Dark Knight, it just got even more potent. His title on production of DC’s upcoming superhero team-up, Justice League, has been elevated to Executive Producer.

The execution of the Batman character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was not as some fans had hoped. Although it was one of the stronger parts of the movie, it was not quite the ground-breaking new incarnation that some people had been looking forward to. I believe that this was largely due to poor writing and directing. Affleck is an incredibly skilled actor who fits the role of Bruce Wayne perfectly, he just was not given the opportunity to shine in this role due to the movie’s misgivings. There were reportedly moments on set in which Ben Affleck was sat at a laptop re-writing the script while wearing the Batman costume. As funny as that sounds, even re-writes could not fix that mess and the fact that they were re-writing at all while shooting the thing is a sign that there were a lot of issues.

However, the fact that Affleck is getting more say on the character and the franchise as a whole is good news on this front. Many of these characters, particularly Batman, succeed when given strong character exposition. We already know that Affleck can write great expositional dialogue and engrossing character-driven moments from his work on Good Will Hunting. Ben Affleck did not just star in that movie, he also wrote it with co-star Matt Damon. They both won an Oscar for their amazing work on that movie due to their ability to create a connection between characters and the audience in order to make the narrative beats that bit more compelling. That is exactly what Batman v Superman was lacking.

What I took away from Batman v Superman was that, although flawed, it is a promising start to a new shared universe. The news that Ben Affleck is going to have even more involvement in the franchise behind the scenes is even more promising.
